Hispanic voters - The County failed to supply translation assistance at the polls, which is supposed to be required where the population includes 10% or more of a language group.OF INTEREST
Calvary Baptist Church - Voting officials still have not provided appropriate signage to steer voters unfamiliar with the building to the polling place, which is in the basement. This has been a problem since the polling place was moved from Clinton School several years ago. Time to fix it, folks!
Though they do not exactly align, it is interesting to compare the voting for Menendez and the voting for Plainfield's citywide at-large Council seat, which should be approximately comparable.
While 1,105 votes were cast for the Republican citywide candidate, only 966 votes were cast for Kean, for a difference of 139. This means approximately 13% of those inclined to vote Republican did NOT vote for Kean.
Did they vote for Menendez? Perhaps.
There were 6,054 votes cast for Menendez, but only 5,329 for the Democratic citywide candidate, Harold Gibson. How many were Republican? We cannot tell for sure. But, if we assume all of the 139 GOP votes Kean did not get went to Menendez (not provable), it would appear that 586 people who might have voted for Gibson simply failed to do so or voted for Robert Evans, the independent candidate. That's almost 11%.
Interesting.

Your comment on the disparity between those that voted for the Republican supported coucil members here in Plainfield while at the same time not voting for Kean is very interesting. My reason for doing so is simple. I want to see a city council that represents the best interests of Plainfield and not just one man's master plan for our city. We need independent minded and thinking people on the council and I will no longer just vote the line because my parents did and a county machine tells me to do so. The republican candidates at least offered that here in Plainfield. As for the Senate and House races, a strong message had to be sent and it appears that the message was delivered!!! God Bless America...
In yesteday's Plainfield election, I voted straight Democratic ticket except that I did not vote for Gibson - I voted for the independent instead. The reason: I do not like the way City Committee Chairman Jerry Green picked two completely incompetent candidates and Gibson so that the City Counsel was forced to select Gibson to replace the Late Ray Blanco. Also, when Gibson was running with Mayor Robinson-Briggs last year I talked to him and found him to be blindly toting the (Jerry Green) party line. On the other hand I do not care for Mendendez - I could not believe that he voted to allow the President to suspend habeus corpus, thus undoing a thousand years of English Common Law. I did, however, vote for Menendez as a vote against Bush and to recapture the Senate.
