GOVERNMENT / POLITICS
SANTIAGO: The big news last week was the reinstatement of Police Chief Ed Santiago. As reported by Bernice in the Plain Talker, and the Courier and Ledger, Judge Pisansky ruled the city's case was without merit. While the dailies made the connection to the protection of chiefs of police statewide, Bernice pointed out that this was a victory for the Chief's supporters, led by Flor Gonzalez and the Latin American Coalition, as well. In Plainfield Today, Dan suggests there is more local fallout to watch for: how this affects the reorganization plan announced by Mayor Robinson-Briggs on March 22nd, and the ultimate cost to the taxpayers, since Santiago is now seeking monetary damages over the incident. Judge Pisansky instructed Santiago's lawyer to amend the complaint to add the Mayor as a defendant in the action.
SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION: Though the dailies have not picked up on it, there has been a lot of activity around the upcoming April 18 School Board election. While the Courier published the candidate profiles and answers to questions on Sunday, focusing on safety, Bernice went to the Senior Center to get the real election story of the week: an order from the Mayor not to have the traditional forum, substituting instead one-on-ones where the candidates supply food to the Seniors and meet privately with them. Meanwhile, two other community forums are scheduled: QUEST, a schools advocacy group, will host a forum at Washington Community School this Saturday; and the League of Women Voters will have its forum on Thursday, April 13 at the Plainfield Public Library.
SENIOR CENTER: In the Plain Talker, Bernice reviews the issues surrounding the proposed new Senior Center and the Seniors' unhappiness. Dan also reported on the Seniors' feelings they are being slighted.
ODDS 'n ENDS: Bernice pointed out the new Council schedule will make for a week-from-hell for the Clerk's office, with late-night schedules three evenings in a row, since the School Board election falls between the Council agenda meeting and its first Wednesday business meeting. Rest up!...
...After days of complaining to the Ledger's top editorial staff by Dan, the very interesting profile of Union County Dem chairperson Charlotte DeFilippo was finally put online -- check it out here. One reader pointed out that the attorney Jonathan Williams in the picture accompanying the story was the same JW who recently spoke about pay-to-play legislation to the Democratic City Committee. Dan was much more impressed by the fact that the group pictured around the fabled table contained no minorities... Plus ça change...
... Dan also posted an appreciation of Newark Mayor Sharpe James and the questions his departure poses for cities everywhere trying to renew themselves...
